Are Text Based Games Prophitable?(Not web based)

Are text based games profitable?

Someone asked me once I am done with my first text RPG if I was going to sell copies of my game on my web site.


Well I was wondering if there's a big enough audience that would even buy my games other than the blind.

I plan on just making profits from the ads on my site and from donations.

Note: There's equipment that the blind use to use a computer and there's some program that reads off the text to you. In windows XP there's Narrator.

In this day and age, text games are not profitable. They are great for hobbyists but you can often get graphical games for free that blow the doors off of anything text-based.

There is more to games than graphics, and there are plenty of people out there that still enjoy a text based game.

I didn't do any searching, but I remembered this company from a conversation I had with someone a while ago about any good MUDs still running.

Some of the first games I played were the old Infocom text adventures (Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc.). There is an active community writing these games (see the Usenet group, I think it's rec.arts.int-fiction). Text-based games are about story, not about explosions.

Actually the best way to be profitable in a text-based game is to offer it as a free download and have Google Ads on your site. I know one guy who makes $11,000 per month off of a dozen sites that he maintains. People are always attracted to ''free''.

I made my decision. I am going to leave all my text based games downloads free and have google ads.

But... How do I get ads on my site? Is there a monthly fee for them?
