I went in 2005 as a student volunteer. I spent most of the time working (no salary, but they paid for my hotel and a few meals), but I got a chance to go to some of the lectures and paper sessions and so forth. It was pretty cool; you get to see a lot of demonstrations of cutting-edge, experimental work. There are also some parties and of course you can meet a lot of talented and smart people.

I'm not going, but I'd like to, but only if my university would pay (not much chance at the moment) or my employer (none at the moment or in the near future). Too bad ;)

Roel: you should try to get in as a student volunteer (too late for this year's siggraph, but next year). You have to pay your transportation to/from the conference (which I know would be a bundle for you coming from Europe), but they will give you full access to the conference for free, and probably put you up in a hotel. Of course you have to do some work, but that's not so bad :)

Mind you, we are europeans. We are used to getting stuff for free as students. Bah... working for your benefits. You americans will be the death of me... :D

But seriously. I didn't know they had such an offer. I should try and do that myself.

That sounds nice! I wanted to visit the US anyway, so I'll keep it in mind for next year.
