Which Code?

Hello.

Now i won't beat around the bush, i am a complete beginner when it comes to coding. But i have aspirations that maybe in a couple of years time (if i buckle down and learn the coding systems) that i will be able to make an online rpg.

I started to teach myself C++ but i'm not sure if that's the system i should be learning for what i want to evetually be able to create.
What i want to eventually be able to create is not anything with 3d graphics or anything you have to download, but more of a browser/text type thing (eg. http://www.movoda.net).

So i was wondering what would be the best system to learn for this. PHP is more to do with web based creations isn't it? So would i be better off learning PHP & MYSQL rather than C++?

Reckon you'd be better off with Java (Much as it pains me to admit it) myself ...

Do remember though .. don't jump straight in making an ultra complicated game. You will only get disheartened. Write a few simple games to begin with (Tetris is always good, as is breakout and several other simple (Game mechanics wise)). It will give you a far better understanding of how to structure a game for when you DO attempt a full-on project.

The link doesn't work, but php and mysql would be better for a browser based game. Java is nice because it works for both web apps and desktop apps, but it also gets kind of complicated on the web side. You might want to find some type of ajax thing so you get targeted changes. Php is also an excellent starter language. C++ is a little tough to get started with. Python would also be a good choice if you use one of the web type applications for it, or possibly ruby on rails. But yeah, forget c++ if you want to do a browser game.

Yes i know not to jump straight into a big project, once i get the hang of coding i was going to start out small - first just make something i can play myself, then maybe move onto a small test game that multiple players can play, then onto something bigger.

So if i wanted to learn php & mysql what would be the best way to go about it? Buy a teach yourself book, online tutorials, etc...?

There are lots of tutorials on the net. I'd check out Ruby on Rails first though. It's a great starter language and an excellent web framework.
