1GB for gmail, 2GB for hotmail, for email they both effectively mean infinite storage for most people. When you get that much space, I think features are a lot more important.

Does anyone else find the buttons in Hotmail really small and inconveniently placed? If I want to download an attachment, I want a big shiney button saying download on the 'Virus not found page'.

Anyway, I prefer email clients.

the design of hotmail is... different.. yes.. but quite okay.. if you're trained to symbol-bar-applications :D

then again, my 1gb gmx account in outlook is great, too :D

i think the layout of hotmail is really nice! maybe a bit slow when it needs to load all these graphics but i would say it's up to the users themself.. i've done good with only 2 mb of space in 3 years now! well i don't say no to 2 gb! :)

i haven't seen gmail yet but i've read alot about their privacy policy but what the fuck.. it's.. just a mailbox..

Gmail puts the others to shame. With javascript they add quite a few 'application' features, that make it feel more in realtime. Visually its nice and simple and readable. All actions are very easy to do. Nice threading. *removes tongue*.

i prefer mail clients anyways.. dunno.. i don't like html for tasks/applications anyways (i don't like it at all actually). reall applications are just much more efficient to use.

I often move between many computers so I cant use a normal email client, I am forced to use some sort of web mail client. Gmail is the answer to my prayers. It has so much space that I use it to store archives of my homework. As well as backups of pet projects. The interface and useability are second to none imho. The whole privacy argument had little merit to anyone not wearing a tin foil hat in the beginning and after a few ammendments it is moot now. Everything they have now has a very specific privacy policy. I got the tray icon notifier that polls google to tell me when to check it for new mail, and it says explicitly exactly what information is set to my computer and what is sent back, and it is the bare minimum to achieve the desired capability. For example an excerpt:

The Notifier briefly stores email snippets — the small bit of text from the first few lines of your unread messages — in temporary memory on your computer. It does not permanently store any data nor does it transmit any data back to Google.

Gmail was good to begin with and has quickly responded to all problems except those which simply cannot be reconciled without halting gmail completely.

the best thing of gmail is the lone fact that it exists. now we get everywhere huge spaces for mail.. we would never have that by today.. thanks google!

I prefer using a mail client, and I don't care so much about space either (not that I don't want 1+ GB...). However, Gmail might be 1 GB, Hotmail might be 2 GB, but do either of them offer POP3 access?

it doesn't look like the hotmail offering is for free actually. because i have an offering to pay for getting 2gb on hotmail.

i'm happy with gmx. 1gb, free, pop/mail.

pop access means nothing to me since I use the web interface. That is the whole reason for wanting a provider. Otherwise just about anything would work.

I consider webmail and popmail to be different entities. I have no need or desier for popmail I do however need webmail. Gmail is webmail.

I do understand your point though, but keep in mind that just because you want your desktop interface, many people are happy with the web interface alone.

sure. i don't want my desktop. but most users want. outlook is way to go (or other software, of course, too).

the trick is, there are two ways you can check your mail. both should always be offered. anything else is bullshitting the users.

as i said. you have to pay for more. at least this is still the way i'd get my 2gb on hotmail. but i won't pay, of course. i have yet 2gb, one on gmx and one on gmail. and the 320 on my hd's left :D
