View Full Version : Logo Change Poll

Feel free to make your own logo too!

NomadRock

The first one is confusing to read. But the other one doesnt really strike me either, so I voted neither. I hate to vote for none with nothing better to present, but I hope we will get some more alternatives. If not then I would take the second one over the first one and the current one.

bladder

I have to agree with NomadRock about the first logo. It's too "blotchy". But I think the current log is better then the second logo, so I voted that the current logo is OK. If the logo must be changed, I'd suggest playing around with the current design. Maybe changing the font and colors a bit. The placing of hte current one is pretty good though IMO.

Mihail121
08-31-2004, 01:26 AM
Don't like the current and the both suggestions. At my opinion this site doesn't need to look stylish or anything and although people will throw shoes at me here is my suggestion: get rid of all graphics and go with plain text only. For example "Programmers Heaven". This is a good example of how programming-related site should look like!

I’m with bladder. Just change the current one a bit. The yellow dot is what mostly throws it off because it’s large and interferes with the slogan beneath it. I’m not much for a logo designer, I tend to just use nice graphics and slap my name on the corner of it =)

NomadRock

I dont mind the yellow dot, but I really dont like that font, it is way to distorted.

The current logo is just as fine. Plus, it's hard to change the site's logo when devmaster is not that famous... When websites link to us, almost all of them have the current logo and it's hard to contact each website to change the logo. I really HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND changing the logo, at least for now...

NomadRock
08-31-2004, 02:28 PM
nkharat, your argument does not seem to support your conclusion. You say that it is difficult to track down all of the websites that link here to change it so we should not change it while the site is not famous...

There are currently not many places linking here (I hadn't noticed any and only got here by a recommendation by dave in the flipCode forums.) As the site grows there will only be more places linking rather than less, so I would say it is best to change it now, before it gets so popular that it is not feasible.

Noor
08-31-2004, 02:43 PM
Here are a few famous websites that link to us (as a logo):
1. gamedev.net
2. garagegames.com
3. angelcode.com
4. code4u.com
5. devimg.net

There are some more, but I forgot. btw lots of other site link to us but not that famous.

when I say link, i mean they put our logo so ppl click on it.

btw, rather than spending efforts changing the logo, might as well spend the efforts changing site layout as it is more important. I've personally talked to Dia and he gave promises.

NomadRock

In #2 the .net portion just didn't fit. The 3rd is better in this respect. It could use some antialiasing though. If changed you should also probably change the favicon to be white on red to match. Also, the colorscheme across the whole site should probably be reworked. I am not sure I liked it at first, but it is growing on me the more I analyze it. I think I could surely grow to love it. I vote for #3

Mihail121
09-01-2004, 12:33 AM
*LOL* 3rd one ROXX! it's a little choppy at the edges but that's fixable :D Nice work Francois!

davepermen
09-01-2004, 12:44 AM
3rd needs more contrast in the fontpart at the red piece, and the edges have to be bether, else quite nice.

cjp88can
09-01-2004, 02:02 AM
I would go with #2 even though black is good for #1 but #2 match's the site more.

bladder
09-01-2004, 03:25 AM
I actually put the logos (1 (http://triplebuffer.devmaster.net/misc/1.JPG), 2 (http://triplebuffer.devmaster.net/misc/2.JPG)) into the site. and I gotta say that the second one really does look quite good in there.

Francois Hamel: I don't have a paint app right now (downloading gimp as I type), but if you have some time could you maybe try out these small adjustments for the second logo:

- Move the "dot" a wee bit down, and the "DevMaster" part a wee bit up, so that it looks like the 'e' is sinking into the dot.
- Tilt the 'e' a bit, like 30 degrees or something.
- Change the font of the slogan: "Your source for game..." to the font that the first logo uses.
- Make the slogan black and make it fill out the bottom of the logo a little bit more.
- Maybe try adding a very slight either grey or blue tint to the background. But if it's grey, change the color of "net" to a gloomy yellow or darker grey/blue or something.

Francois Hamel

ok I'll see what I can do once I get back home
thanks for the feeback

NomadRock
09-01-2004, 09:31 AM
I still think it would be better to change the colors on the forum to match the 3rd logo...

Francois Hamel
09-01-2004, 05:39 PM
Ok I did (yet) another one. This time I took a screenshot of the web site and designed the logo directly on it in order for it to kinda match the whole site design and colors.

I think it came out pretty good. I sent it to Dia you'll be able to see it as soon as he post it.

Dia Kharrat

I'll fix it if this is ever gonna be the real one

bladder
09-01-2004, 09:34 PM
That last one is really nice. I hope you don't mind Francois, but I took your concept and kinda shifted things around a bit, got a different variation of your last one, and tried a few different color schemes.

1 (http://triplebuffer.devmaster.net/misc/dm1.gif)

I like the orientation of the .net better in those latest ones bladder. I think it might be nicer to use fewer colors though. ie less gradients

Kenneth Gorking

Liked that last one, especially that flare at the D. Very nice work, bladder

Francois Hamel
09-02-2004, 05:12 PM
maybe Dia should add them under the other ones I provided in order for all to see so we can compare easily

anyone else interrested in making a logo?
it doesn't have to be that sophisticated... simple logos are most of the times the best

john
09-02-2004, 06:25 PM
I like #4 (Francois Hamel's logo better), although it needs some slight work. It's colors match the site more than the others. Who made flipcode's logo? flipcode's logo is the best.

NomadRock
09-02-2004, 06:52 PM
agreed flipCode has an awesome logo. These latest ones look too square. I say give #3 a color change and it would work.

Here's my attempt. It feels like it's missing something, I don't have an eye for it right now. Perhaps someone can edit it further or some such.
http://members.rogers.com/nath_meyer/Gamedev.png

The image requires firebird 0.9X series browser to make out the alpha channel in the PNG image. If you're using IE, it will most likely have some funky background colour.

NomadRock
09-03-2004, 08:18 AM
The Nut. Give it a little more color, and less shadow on the lower text, on that it is more blurring than anything else.

Perhaps you could stylize it a little more. I am not sure how though. I like this one the best so far.

a logo should look good in black and white only.. if it doesn't, it sucks. this rule always existed for printing/stamping reasons. but it stays even now. thats what thenut has what your's doesn't. the reduction to only the needed bits.

what program are you guys using to create those logos

my advise is to remove the poll, let a few more entries come in until we've got a fair selection in. Then restart the poll. I voted when it first came out, now I want to change my mind and can't.

nkharrat : the first one is a little too comic style

NomadRock

Francois Hamel
09-03-2004, 11:37 AM

nkharrat:
Your second logo is really awesome

nkharrat : your second one "sort of" reminds me of flipcode... :)

Noor
09-03-2004, 12:28 PM
ok here I fixed the .NET position, and took the "." off from .NET so it woun't look like it's dedicated to microsoft software

What do you think??

NomadRock
09-03-2004, 12:40 PM
not bad but it looks to be dependant on a black background. Not bad for flipcode, but DevMaster is pretty light.

09-03-2004, 01:05 PM

Blue = great background color.
Something to do with the human eye... look it up :-)

Anyways, the current color scheme is great and the look of the forums shouldn't change at all. That logo definitly needs to change. I suggest trying that last one without the giant dot and then tweaking it a bit till it looks balanced without it.

anubis
09-03-2004, 04:02 PM
let's just open a new poll

NomadRock
09-03-2004, 04:47 PM
There is still much discussion and I think there will be more submissions.

I would also suggest that you use in general darker colors considering the light background. The "net" in particular is hard to read.

Though I do have to say that I like the style of my own the best. It could use some polishing though.

niCe!!

Im all for a new poll as well. But I think that Dia should put a deadline now. Give a week or so at max for people to dish out whatever they can, then we can have a final poll.

SnprBoB86
09-03-2004, 08:37 PM
Much nicer.

Some constructive critisism:

The V in Dev looks like a U. I realized it's stylized, but it is kind of glaring.

Put the dot back before the "net", but make it hte same font as the "net" with the same color and everything.

Lower that "Your source for game development" a little bit so it is aligned middle with the ".net"

God job!

TheNut
09-03-2004, 08:49 PM
The last two from nkharrat are pretty good. The first one could look a lot better and probably get my definite vote if the colour scheme is changed. Maybe just lower the saturation on the yellow colour.

Good stuff.

Dia Kharrat
09-03-2004, 08:56 PM
I think we should turn this into a contest with a prize. I guess the best prize would be that you're logo becomes the official devmaster logo :D
I'll post some info on a new thread about the contest. And a poll would decide the winner. Feel free to keep posting though.

MJeannig

here is one:
http://img32.exs.cx/img32/7193/LogoTemplate-Logo_04.png

This is my prefered. It look really unique. May be some work to make it less toon. Another font ? The splash is really great.
I don't like the green "net", but I do not really like this "net" in any logo. It sound too much like .net framework.
The dot could be a smiley ;). Could be nice to personalise the logo to make it look human.
The dot could be seen in perspective too (like the circle on the ground on the tron poster : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084827/posters) . We are doing tridimensionnal world, I would like a tridimensionnal logo.
Just my ideas as I'm not able to produce a good looking logo.

why having your design on the front page indefinately of course!

NomadRock
09-15-2004, 10:52 AM
Maybe, but google has one logo up all the time, and for special events they stick up a version with some cartoon stuff around the normal logo, they still maintain a high degree of consistancy, something devmaster would not were it to have all of these logos cycling.

davepermen
09-15-2004, 10:58 AM
i know. pouet doesn't. but the special-event-logo thingy is cool, too.. :D

then again, weather based css would be best, weather, daytime, event, etc.. :D
