Lately, there are a few techniques that have been used that should be added to your engine system.
Lighting:
HDR (High Dynamic Range Rendering, such as in Source, Reality Engine, Unreal Engine 3, and many more engines)
PRT (Precomputed Radiance Transfer, in Reality Engine)
Physics:
Ragdoll Physics (Source, RealmForge GDK, and many more)
Animation:
Ragdoll Animation (RealmForge GDK)
