Can members have avatars? I'm new here so excuse my dumb question, but I don't see anything in control panel for it.
If not, I would like to suggest that members be allowed to upload avatars and that their image can be displayed with their posts.
avatars are currently disabled

why?
(And why should my message be at least 10 characters? :P)

We used to have avatars, but with the new forum software they were disabled for some odd reason.
To be honest, I quite like it this way. Neater, somehow. I vote to keep it like this but I have a feeling I'll be outvoted :D.

Avatars have been intentionally disabled. Avatars tend to add unnecessary clutter to the forums...we'd like to keep the forums as clean as possible.

If we're putting this to a vote, I say keep the avatars disabled.
I hate the crazy animated gif stuff -- I'm here for information, not for a seizure, thanks.

If I had one as cool as the one in .oisyn's profile, I would want them enabled too. =)
Otherwise, I'm with Mr. Clean. No avatars!!!

I agree, animated avatars can be annoying. If you were to enable the avatars, maybe only allow for JPEG files. Nobody can animate a JPEG image, unlike GIFs which allow for multiple frames. Also, maybe set the avatar size to something small like 64x64 so it is not as distracting from the actual message.

I've demoed this vBulliten version, and on the Avatar page there are two options, one to enable avatars, and one to enable animated avatars. You can have avatars without having seizures :).

I disagree. I'm an admin on a very large computer-related forum (currently 150,000 registered members and about 25 million posts), and having avatars really helps in recognizing your fellow members. We have set some rules of course, we limit the size of the avatars to 60x60 pixels, it should be max 100kb and it shouldn't be too flashy. Furthermore, every user can choose for himself if avatars are visible or not, so those who don't want to see it can easily disable it.
I prefer avatars too, and if you keep strict rules nothing will get messed up. I'm better at remembering faces than names, and the same applies for avatars. I'd vote for avatars (if anyone cares anyway).

I'm in for Avatars too!
It adds a bit more personality to every member...

I'll throw my hat in for avatar. I personally think it allows the user to add a bit of themselves into their posts too.. I really liked my avatar on the old boards, but that prob doesn't exist anymore

Personally I favor avatars only because it adds colour and creativity to the boards. It looks pretty plain when it’s straight up text, and not many people post pictures here.

I second you. To me, the cleaner and lighter, the better. By the way, if the boss comes in, I prefer him not to notice I'm reading some forum. Just kidding. :-P

I didn't have an avatar on the old forums, and I probably won't get round to having one here either. Keeps the loading times down.

For those wanting a "clean" forum without "clutter"

this isn't a chat room, don't expect a reply within 2 minutes of posting.
Also, you shouldn't be posting to old topics with vague queries. What do you mean by "frames for avatars"?

1.) He's probably from GDNet, where you really do get replies within two minutes of posting ;)
2.) He's probably asking for avatars in general to be enabled. I second said motion.
That's my interpretation :)

Well. I wish people would give up this avatar business. Personally it is refreshing to have a forum where there aren't a bunch of flashing images in avatars and signatures.

See, now that's exactly why we shouldn't have avatars. If something like that was on every third post, I would never get any work done :D

For the last time: vBulliten allows complete customization iof the avatar system. Not only can it be made so that avatars cannot be animated, but it can also be restricted to certain file formats and sizes. Plus, you can choose not to view avatars. What's wrong with letting people have avatars if you can choose not to view them?

They are pretty darn cool, but more darn distracting. Apart from recognition, avatars have little purpose on forums, it's not like Devmaster is big enough for one to need to recognise individual members fast.

i loved to recognize people due to their avatars in this board. i'd like to have them back on.. they really help.
but not animated, i think.. except for the admins, so they can stand out as the special ones. but thats just a detail.
i work with icons, avatars, symbols _everywhere_. http://davepermen.net/records.png here you can see how i put the cd-covers or vinyl-covers onto all of the tracks / cdrips i have. this is for me to help finding something fast while mixing with finalscratch. much faster than reading names, and trying to remember tracknames and all..
there's a reason gui-systems quickly got tons of symbols: they are more easy to remember than texts/names.
For me the same as for davepermen, i recognize and remember peoples way easier and faster by a glance at their avatars.
dave: interesting to see "Thunderdome" in your records folder :)

hehe yeah.. that's just in there because a friend gave me the cd for the next time some hardcore-fans won't stop requesting that we play some hardcore.. then we plug some of this folder over the vinyl into the club.. (but only at ...... veeeeeeeeery .... late hours :D)

I'd like to see avatars enabled. Having an avatar is a way for someone to remember who you are at a glance.. chances are that you're not going to remember 50 people just by their usernames; you need something unique to remember them by.
If not that, I'd at least like to see signature images (small ones) enabled for the same reason.
Maybe there could just be a "no animations" rule in place? Hm.. in fact, disabling GIF's might be an option (for avatars, at least). I don't know much about vBulletin, but if this forum was built on phpBB then it would probably be fairly easy.

Ok, avatars are enabled now, but they're not shown by default. Anybody comfortable with avatars can enable them from the Control Panel (under 'Edit Options'). This should hopefully keep everyone happy :)
Cool! Thanks! Hmm, but now I only need to find one... :)

Is the avatar copied from the URL, or is it loaded directly. I asked because I might finally be able to automate my JwN meter! :geek:

Unfortunately no, the board will save the avatar from wherever, and use it locally.
I may as well go with the avatar I had before, at least until I think of another one to use.
