Unity3D 2.6 is now free (Indie version. was US$ 199). I think itīs a very clever movement from Unity3D.
Thanks a lot to these guys. www.unity3d.com |

That's pretty much K.O. at Torque and Shiva.

I'm not talking about that. See... with Unity being free, pretty much everyone is going to use it. Therefore, more and more games will appear using the Unity plugin. With more people installing the Unity plugin, Unity will be able to establish a pretty solid audience, making their product the new standard in web gaming. Simple as that. K.O.
With huge prices, Shiva and Torque scare small developers, hobbyists and newbies. And those are responsible for the popularity of Flash gaming, for example. |

I'll give it about 6 months without question in a year. it will start to reach flash like penetration. the only thing with a similar model is blender but its interface and workflow turn a lot of people off. despite it being free. dx studio might follow suit and release a completely free version. they may be able to give it some challenge. but right now unity is completly in the drivers seat, with no competition

This will increase it's market audience, but IMHO I think Unity needs two things to get similar penetration as Flash (or anywhere close). 1) PC vendors need to be shipping the Unity web plugin on their PCs as standard. 2) They need some extremely popular sites to require the Unity plugin, like how YouTube requires Flash.
