Boss

In game design, a boss is a very powerful enemy character. Usually, the boss is the last enemy that the player must defeat before winning the game. There may be many "minibosses" throughout a game; for instance, the Mario games have a boss at the end of each level, and the Half-Life games have enemies that could be considered bosses at major story divisions. Frequently, the boss cannot be defeated by the same methods that defeat lesser enemies (e.g. firing weapons or casting spells); sometimes, there is a puzzle that must be solved or a special item that must be found that allows the player to kill the boss.
