Category:Lighting and Shading

From DmWiki

Lighting and shading is a general term for many different techniques, all intended to make rendered images more realistic by simulating the way light behaves in the real world. Lighting and shading is one of the strongest cues for realism that we can offer; the shininess of a surface, the reflection in a pool of water, or the flickering shadow cast by a fire can improve the appearance of a game by many levels.

Some examples of lighting effects are Phong shading, specular highlights, shadows, and fog. Lighting can be completely dynamic (for example, in Doom 3), or a mix of dynamic and precalculated (as in Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and other games based on the Half-Life engines).
