This term means that the code can operate on many different computer systems, such as Microsoft's Windows, Apple's MacOSX and GNU/Linux.

People are starting to believe that computer operating systems will eventually become commodities, and developers are keen to make their applications available to a wide range of systems. A recent examples is Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/firefox).
