The Graphics Processing Unit is a specialized processing unit. Whereas the CPU is used for everything, the GPU is generally used to process graphics. When you buy a video card or a graphics card, you are effectively buying a GPU. Everything that is output to the monitor goes through the GPU and its pipeline. If you do not have the extra graphics hardware then the CPU is used. But you need the hardware to run modern games these days.
