Inventory

From DmWiki

Inventory is essential to many games, especially RPG's and adventure games. You can think of your Inventory as a place where all the items that you collect in the game are stored. In some games, the inventory has unlimited space; but in most games, the space, if you will, is limited, and you can only carry so many items at once. Sometimes the inventory space is subdivided by type, so that you can carry so many spells, so many weapons, so much armor, etc.

Most games have a simple interface for organizing your inventory so that you can easily add an item to your inventory, use or activate an item from your inventory, and remove or sell an item from your inventory.

Having an inventory is a necessary and enjoyable to aspect to these types of games. It adds a dimension to games, because you have to know:

1. What's important and what's not, what to keep and what to throwaway (because you can't carry everything)

2. What item to use when. Some items give you magic powers, or extra strength, or special armor, all of which may only work against certain enemies or at certain times or locations or in certain contexts. Some items may actually be harmful and harm you if you use them!

3. Know how to combine items. Sometimes, one or more items can or must be combined in order to make an even more powerful or magical item.

4. Where to find an item in the first place, and how to obtain it. Often key items can only be attained by conquering some enemy or completing some difficult task.

Some games may have multiple inventory systems. For example, you may have one inventory that consists of what you carry with you, on your avatar, and another that consists of what you can store in your virtual home or residence.
