MOB

From DmWiki

The term MOB generally refers to any generic enemy computer controlled being in a game, whether they be monsters, animals or other humans.

This is not to be confused with an NPC, which is (usually) a friendly Non-Player Character in game.

The General term MOB (sounds like "Mob"-ster) is a shortened version of the term "Mobile Object". It is not to be confused with "MOB", a gaming term for a sprite or on-screen moving object (Movable Object Block).

Mobs were first introduced in Text based MUDs (Multi User Dungeons), as there were three types of structures capable of being created in game: Areas, Objects and Mobs. Specialized scripts of code could be assigned to the Mob to make the character more interactive using various triggers. The first known MUD was created in 1978 at the Essex University.
