Progressive mesh
From DmWiki
The term Progressive Mesh describes a dynamic data structure that is used to represent a given (usually quite complex) triangle mesh. At runtime a progressive mesh provides a triangle mesh representation whose complexity is appropriate for the current view conditions. The purpose of progressive meshes is to speed up the rendering process by avoiding the rendering of details that are unimportant or completely invisible.
